Project Background

In response to the complex humanitarian challenges faced by Ukraine, our secondary data review analysis seeks to establish a comprehensive data platform and reportage for Ukraine within the humanitarian sector. The ongoing socio-political dynamics and regional conflicts demand a nuanced understanding of the evolving landscape to effectively address the needs of affected populations. Our primary objective is to compile and integrate diverse data relevant to the humanitarian situation in Ukraine. This includes data on displacement, health indicators, education, and other critical aspects, sourced from reputable international organizations, NGOs, media, and governmental bodies.

By establishing this platform for secondary data analysis, we aspire to enhance the collective understanding of the humanitarian landscape in Ukraine, fostering collaboration and informed decision-making among those committed to making a positive impact in the region.

What We Do

DFS provides high-quality and joint humanitarian data analysis. Our data analysts decipher complex datasets and extract insights that drive informed decision-making in humanitarian crises, such as the crisis in Ukraine. This humanitarian data analysis empowers locally-led and principled humanitarian action. This is achieved through close contact with field-level operational partners during the remote analysis process such as REACH and, where needed, field deployments of DFS’ team. By marrying data precision with adaptability, we navigate the data challenges and intricacies of humanitarian operations, ensuring a resilient response to dynamic situations.

How We Do It

Timely and Comprehensive Situational Analysis

We conduct regular situational analyses on a monthly basis, providing a pulse on evolving scenarios within Ukraine. Our team meticulously analyses data from a variety of sources to offer key insights, fostering a comprehensive understanding of dynamic humanitarian situations in Ukraine. Our strong secondary data analysis skills and tools cover both qualitative and quantitative data and combined with our understanding of humanitarian situations, these reports produced are of high quality.

Utilising the DEEP Platform for Data Maintenance

We employ the DEEP platform to curate and maintain a robust database of secondary data. This database serves as a valuable resource, readily accessible to the humanitarian community for informed decision-making and is open-source. We ensure that our datasets are available for public consumption. We use tools such as theDEEP as our main tool to  conduct analysis across the humanitarian clusters and explore and evaluate durable solutions to transition out of humanitarian crises. We created a collaborative environment for humanitarian analysts to input and analyse data with 121+ contributors, 10,964 sources, and 46,881 data entries. We do this by bridging human and artificial intelligence in data analysis. Our analysis team integrates their knowledge  with cutting-edge technologies, particularly in the domains of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML). This results in a 50% increase in the variety of data sources available for analysis and time saved.

Adaptable Analysis Products for Pertinent Issues

In addition to routine situational analyses, we craft demand-based analysis products that address specific and pertinent issues. These targeted analyses delve into critical subjects such as the impact of conflict on older persons and the humanitarian conditions in communities proximate to the frontline.

Identifying Historic Trends for Confident Future Exploration

Through our data analyses, we empower stakeholders to identify historic trends and patterns. This historical context supports a more confident exploration of potential future scenarios, aiding proactive decision-making.

Impact

In times of conflict, the importance of accurate and timely information cannot be overstated. Through collaborative processes and the use of tools such as theDEEP, we aim to have our reports identify the complex challenges in the Ukraine conflict and empower humanitarian efforts by delivering actionable intelligence.

DFS has been providing data analysis services to humanitarian organisations and donors to support decision making processes and information management. The Ukraine analysis has enabled the humanitarian community working in Ukraine to gain easy access to a summary of key findings, current trends and humanitarian needs along with an overview of recent available data. Our robust methodology allows us to provide rapid publications of analysis products that fulfil the partner’s requirements and rely on a comprehensive set of multi-sourced data. In essence, our methodology blends routine analyses with specialised products, underpinned by a commitment to delivering actionable insights.
